Design in the Age of AI

2026 marks a turning point for digital design. AI tools have moved from novelty to necessity in the design workflow, generative UI is moving from concept to production, and users have higher expectations than ever for interfaces that feel intelligent and personalized. Here are the trends our design team is seeing define the best digital products this year.

1. Glassmorphism 2.0

Glassmorphism - frosted glass cards with background blur effects - took the design world by storm in 2022 and has evolved significantly since. In 2026, the trend has matured into a more restrained, purposeful application. Instead of applying glass effects to entire interfaces, designers are using them selectively for navigation, modals, and overlays where the layering effect adds genuine depth and hierarchy.

2. Dark Mode as Default

Dark mode has shifted from a user preference to an expectation. More than 80% of users in developer and tech audiences prefer dark interfaces. Beyond aesthetics, dark interfaces reduce eye strain in low-light environments, save battery on OLED screens, and often feel more premium. Building dark-first with a light mode option is now our default approach for most products.

3. Bento Grid Layouts

Inspired by Apple's product pages and adopted widely across SaaS landing pages, bento grid layouts use a mosaic of asymmetric cards to present features, stats, and benefits in a visually dynamic, scannable format. This layout style balances visual variety with clean structure and tends to perform extremely well on conversion-focused landing pages.

4. Micro-Interactions and Motion

  • Subtle hover states that give feedback without distraction.
  • Scroll-triggered animations that reveal content progressively.
  • Loading skeletons instead of spinners to maintain perceived performance.
  • Smooth page transitions that maintain context during navigation.

5. Personalized and Adaptive Interfaces

AI is enabling interfaces that adapt to individual user behavior - surfacing relevant features, adjusting content density, and personalizing navigation based on usage patterns. This is still emerging but will become a differentiator for premium products over the next 18 months.
